The Daily Cut: Grateful Dead “Truckin'”

Grateful Dead: “Truckin'”

ALBUM:  American Beauty

YEAR:  1970

WRITERS:  Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Robert Hunter

Peaked at number-64 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not exactly a smash, but their highest charting song until “Touch of Grey,” which became their only Top 20 hit 17 years later.

Grateful Dead guitar Bob Weir on why “Truckin'” is, in a good way, kind of a period piece.  “The stuff in ‘Truckin” is all stuff that we just lived through, one way or another, sort of wrapped up in a ball. We tried to update it from time to time but it just doesn’t seem to work so we just — this is sort of a time capsule from one era of our existence, back in the early 70s.”

45 years ago today the Dead entered Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco to start recording American Beauty.
